Jose Aldo Knocks Out Chad Mendes at UFC 142, Keeps Featherweight Belt

Jose Aldo retains his UFC featherweight title with his win over Chad Mendes at UFC 142.Jose Aldo is still the featherweight champion of the UFC.

Aldo, fighting back home in Brazil for the first time since signing with Zuffa, defeated Chad Mendes by first-round knockout at UFC 142, defending his featherweight title and showing once again that he's among the most lethal strikers in mixed martial arts, in any weight class.

It was a huge left knee to Mendes' face that knocked Mendes flat on his back, and Aldo then pounced with a couple of punches on the ground before referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight at the 4 minute, 59 second mark of the first round -- just one second remained in the round.

"I want to thank the home crowd, all my friends who came out," Aldo said afterward. "I'm so happy fighting at home."

Aldo showed that happiness to be fighting at home by running into the crowd after the fight, where he was mobbed by fans. It could have caused a crowd control problem, as large numbers of fans swarmed around Aldo, but there were no incidents and Aldo eventually made his way back into the Octagon for his post-fight interview.

The story of the fight before that brutal knee was Mendes' inability to take Aldo down: Mendes tried for takedowns and Aldo had little trouble shaking him off. In the final minute of the fight Mendes did grab hold of Aldo and clinch with him against the fence, and at one point Aldo had to hold the fence to prevent from being taken down. But Aldo bided his time against the fence, saw that opening, and finished things with that knee.

The win improves Aldo's professional MMA record to 21-1, while Mendes lost for the first time in his career and drops to 11-1.

"Jose's a great champion. He's a tough dude. That's the best I've felt for any fight, I was very prepared, and he got me," Mendes said afterward. "He was the better man."

For Mendes, there's no shame in losing to Aldo. Aldo is among the greatest fighters in the sport.

Miesha Tate, Sarah Kaufman still not convinced Ronda Rousey should be challenging for a title

Ronda Rousey has dislocated and or broken an arm in three or her four fights and she's got a big mouth and decorated history as a Judo practitioner interntionally. Apparently, that's been more than enough to sell them that Rousey challenging Miesha Tate will make for a great promotion come Mar. 3 in Columbus, Oh.

The 135-pound champ Tate isn't convinced Rousey should be in there.

"There are more deserving in the sport of MMA, such as Sarah Kaufman," Tate said on HDNet's "Inside MMA" (1:20 mark). "I don't feel that Ronda isn't going to necessarily going to be a competitve fight or that she's not talented or anything of the such. I do feel that she kind of talked herself into this title fight more than anything else. But what's done is done. My job is to shutup and fight, so that's exactly what I'm going to do."

Kaufman brought it even stronger.

"I've earned the title shot. I've had the Strikeforce title; I've had two good wins coming off my only loss in 15 fights, and I've earned and deserve the right to fight for that title," Kaufman told MMAjunkie. "Having Ronda have the option of coming in and fighting at 145 pounds, having two fights with Strikeforce, and all of a sudden, she gets a title shot at a division she doesn't fight in, it's a slap in the face."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker disagrees with Kaufman's assessment.

"The way I look at it, she already has the martial arts combat experience to fight at any level, and she's proven that to use two or three times. A girl that's that explosive, Olympic judo background, probably been on the mat more than Miesha, maybe, more than any female fighter we have in our roster ? how can you say she's not title-worthy?"

He also had a message for his jilted former champ.

"You know what, you'll get your shot at some point, but you gotta win," Coker said during the Strikeforce postfight press over the weekend. "If she had continued to win, this would've never happened. She would be the one getting in there against Miesha. You do your part, let us do our part. We'll see each other March 3 and maybe thereafter she'll get her shot."

Kaufman faces Alexis Davis the same card.

Kenny Florian May Retire From the UFC Due to Back Injury

Kenny FlorianKenny Florian's mixed martial arts career may have come to an end.

The 35-year-old Florian, who three times fought for a UFC belt, told the Boston Herald that a herniated disc in his lower back could prevent him from ever fighting again. Two doctors, one an orthopedist and one a neurologist, have told him that quitting MMA would be the wisest course of action.

"It's possible, unfortunately," Florian said. "I've kind of been going back-and-forth with some of the doctors, so it's possible. I'm going to see. As of right now, obviously I can't compete and train like I was at all. I'm just kind of doing what I can and hoping that things heal up and get better. I'm just kind of in a holding pattern. That's why I decided to do this commentary for the time being and take this next six months to really heal up and try to make some money on the side. It sucks. The last couple of months I've just been figuring out what's going on and what I'm going to do."

Florian last fought on October 8, losing to featherweight champion Jose Aldo. There was some talk immediately following that fight that Florian could retire, but at that time Florian said he still wanted to compete, likely back at lightweight.

However, things changed when Florian suffered a back injury while lifting weights in November. Florian says he has been dealing with tingling and numbness in his right leg since then.

If there's any silver lining for Florian, it's that he has started to build a second career in broadcasting. In other sports, it's common for former athletes to get jobs as announcers after they walk away but in MMA, where broadcasting jobs are scarce, Florian could become something of a trailblazer. He's a natural on television, and the UFC's new deal to put shows on Fox, FX and Fuel means there are more opportunities available for former fighters to make a living behind the microphone.

"It's not good," Florian told the Herald. "That's why I'm trying to stay hopeful. We'll see. I've been out here in (Los Angeles) doing this show every week for UFC Tonight for Fuel TV and doing some other things. I'm just hoping that it can heal up and get better and then see if I can go back to doing what I was doing. So far, I still need to rest. If I go to do something physical, I'm just not able to do it. That pain is coming back."

If Florian is done, he'll leave MMA with a career record of 14-6, including 12-5 in the UFC. Only 10 fighters in UFC history have more career wins than Florian.

Fans Who Wear Red Trunks to ProElite 3 to Receive Free Tickets for Life

You know that pair of red Speedos in your closet that you always think about wearing? Well, it's time to dust them off because they're your ticket to free MMA shows for life.

ProElite's head of fight operations T. Jay Thompson announced on Twitter recently that any fan who shows up to the organization's Jan. 21 event in Hawaii wearing red trunks will receive free ProElite tickets for life. Yes, for life.

Of course, the publicity stunt is in honor of headliner Ikuhisa Minowa, who's famous for fighting in plain, red trunks.

"It's fun," Thompson told MMAFighting.com. "I'd like to think I'm being innovative, but I'm a fan of promoters like Bill Veeck and P.T. Barnum. I like promoters that don't take life too seriously."

ProElite 3, headlined by Kendall Grove vs. "Minowaman," airs live on HDNet on Jan. 21 from the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, HI. Below is a promo clip for the event.
