Floyd Mayweather Jr.?s jail time delayed until June

A boxer doesn?t get to be 42-0 without an ability to elude damage or a well-rounded gameplan in each battle. In the case of decorated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. those skills apparently carry over into the courtroom as well, as the polarizing pugilist saw his three-month sentence for assault pushed back until early summer rather [...]

?King Mo? Muhammed takes Lorenz Larkin into his realm to force stoppage at Strikeforce

LAS VEGAS - Muhammed Lawal's ready to reclaim his crown. Make that another crown.

Nicknamed "King Mo," Lawal is a nasty ground artist and put the hurt on Larkin, stopping him at 1:32 of the second round in fight No. 3 of the main card at Strikeforce inside The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Lawal got off 15 unanswered shots before referee Kim Winslow saved Larkin. Some in attendance thought it was a late stoppage, including Lawal, who yelled something in disgust about the ref.

"She explained to me that she wants to give us a fair chance to keep on continuing," Lawal said once he calmed down a bit. "If it was me, I'd rather be put to sleep, too."

Lawal, a former star on the international wrestling scene, has developed his striking, but there was little sense in banging it out on the feet with Larkin. Larkin is a dynamic striker with very little grappling experience.

King Mo played to his strength early by scoring a takedown just 27 seconds into the fight. Larkin got back to his feet after a shaky standup by referee Kim Winslow.

Lawal was good on both of takedown attempts and landed 58-of-94 shots on the ground.

In essence, this was a light heavyweight title qualifier. Lawal should be line to face someone for the title later this year. Former champ Dan Henderson vacated the title when he left to return to the UFC.

Strikeforce prelims: Gian Villante wins quick, shaky stoppage against Trevor Smith

LAS VEGAS - After wading into deep water a little soon in his career, Gian Villante is finding his way in the Strikeforce light heavyweight division. The former Hofstra football player rose to the occasion by swarming Trevor Smith and taking him out in less than 70 seconds.

He'll take the win, but the way it went down was little questionable.

Smith, a former wrestling star at Iowa State, had trouble from the start defending himself on the feet. Fighting from a low wrestling stance, he got rocked by a short left hook. The stunned Smith backed up and then tried a sloppy right kick. Villante caught the kick and pushed forward to land a right, and dropped Smith.

On the ground, he got off 13 shots. The last two drilled Smith in the back of the end. That's when referee Kim Winslow stepped in to stop things. A confused Smith began to work a single-leg on the ref. It was all over in just 65 seconds.

Villante (9-3) has won two straight while Smith drops to 9-2. Villante lost his Strikeforce debut against 235-pound heavyweight Chad Griggs and dropped his second against top-level 205-pound prospect Lorenz Larkin.

Strikeforce undercard results:

Estevan Payan def. Alonzo Martinez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Ricky Legere def. Chris Spang via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Nah-Shon Burrell def. James Terry via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Strikeforce Live Blog: Tyron Woodley vs. Jordan Mein Updates

Filed under:

This is the Strikeforce live blog for Tyron Woodley vs. Jordan Mein, a welterweight bout on tonight's Strikeforce on Showtime event from the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Woodley (9-0) is coming off a win over Paul Daley by unanimous decision. Mein (23-7) is a Canadian prospect who scored a TKO win over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos last September in his Strikeforce debut.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Mein pumps out jabs to feel out Woodley. Woodley misses on an overhand right but connects on a kick to the body. 55 seconds is the amount of time elapsed until Woodley shoots. Woodley works for the single-leg with Mein's back against the fence. The referee separates them. Mein misses on a big right hand. Woodley scores the trip takedown and quickly looks for an arm-triangle choke. Woodley settles inside of Mein's halfguard. Mein tries to roll out but Woodley's top control is too good. Woodley lands a nice elbow with under a minute left. Mein escapes to his feet. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Woodley.

Round 2: First strike of the second round is a Mein leg kick that is momentarily caught. Woodley hits the mark on a big right hand that stumbles Mein backwards. The strike also allows Woodley to set up clinch and then the takedown. Woodley is concentrating more on staying in top position instead of landing strikes. Mein off his back actually seems more active than Woodley. Mein lands elbows on Woodley's shoulders. Mein attempts a guillotine but the sweaty Woodley slips right out. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Woodley.

Round 3: Mein tries a jumping knee and Woodley drives him to his back. More of the same with Woodley burying his head into the chest of Mein and pinning him down. Woodley stands up and drops down an elbow. Mein eyes a kimura and for some reason the referee stands them up at this time -- not when Woodley was pinning Mein, but when Mein was looking for a submission. They clinch. Mein tries a takedown but it's blocked. The fight ends with them each trading a knee in clinch. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Woodley. Crowd boos.

Tyron Woodley wins via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)

There's some strange scoring all around tonight, including ones on the undercard, specifically the Burrell-Terry fight. You can sorta, maybe make a case for Mein winning round two for his offense off his back, but Woodley definitely wins at least two of these rounds.
