Donald Cerrone unapologetically authentic

UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone has never shied away from being himself, choosing to opt for his trademark black Stetson rather than the head attire typically worn by his peers and investing his winnings into a ranch where he raises animals (and a bit of hell as well with an assortment of motorcycles and ATVs). However, [...]

Guillard shocked by Lauzon at UFC 136

Guillard shocked by Lauzon at UFC 136

HOUSTON - Everything was lined up perfectly for Melvin Guillard on Saturday. But in just 47 seconds, two-plus years of hard work in the Octagon went down the drain.

Coming in with five straight dominating wins, Guillard needed one more to potentially line up a UFC lightweight title shot. Just like several guys in same position earlier in 2011, though, Guillard lost. He was upset by Joe Lauzon, who used a rear-naked choke to pull off the upset.

Guillard, just like Anthony Pettis, George Sotiropoulos and Jim Miller did in big spots in this year, falls with a possible No. 1 contender slot on the line.

"I blew my dream. I don't deserve to be the champ. I have holes in my game," Guillard said. "I have to get back on the ladder and win some fights. I'm sorry to the fans for the loss and it's back to the drawing board."

This outcome moves the winner of the Ben Henderson-Clay Guida fight in November into prime position. Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez is also being considered for an immediate title shot upon a move over to the UFC. They'll all be watching tonight's main event as UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar defends against Gray Maynard.

Lauzon went off as a 6-to-1 underdog. He's a very good fighter, but his specialty is on the ground. The 27-year-old has a so-so striking game, but that's exactly what helped him notch the victory.

Guillard, who guaranteed a KO finish before the fight, came out swinging for fences. When he tried a left hook, Lauzon beat Guillard to the punch. J-Lau's left rocked Guillard. He backed up and couldn't get his footing. Guillard (29-9-2, 11-5 UFC) hit the ground on his knees and from there he was dead meat against Lauzon's vicious ground game (17-of-21 wins by submission).

"This is the biggest win in my career. I didn't know I had the hook even when I dropped it in. I'm really proud of myself," said Lauzon.

The Bostonian (21-6, 8-3 UFC) quickly transitioned to get Guillard's back and then rolled it over. He got his right arm under Guillard's chin and that's the when the stunned fighter decided to roll to his knees. It was an awful move. Lauzon had even more leverage and cranked back. Guillard could hold out no longer and tapped several times on the mat to end it.

Guillard has lost nine times in his career. Eight have come by submission.

Yves Jabouin vs. Walel Watson Slated for UFC 140

"The Tiger" will meet "The Gazelle" north of the border at UFC 140.

Yves Jabouin, nicknamed "The Tiger," will take on Walel Watson, nicknamed "The Gazelle," on the Dec. 10 card in Toronto, the organization announced Friday afternoon.

Jabouin (16-7) is 2-3 in Zuffa. The Montreal-native won his UFC debut at UFC 134 when he defeated Ian Loveland via unanimous decision. Prior to making his UFC debut in April, he fought for WEC.

The 5-foot-11 Watson looked impressive in his Octagon debut earlier in the month at UFC Live on Versus 6 when he defeated Joseph Sandoval in just 77 seconds via TKO.

UFC 140, headlined by Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida vs. UFC light heavyweight title, will air live on pay-per-view from Toronto's Air Canada Centre.

Demetrious Johnson: ?I?ve been relaxing, eating Jack in the Box and drinking milkshakes.?

Heavyweights often catch a lot of flak for not having to adhere to the strict diet most Mixed Martial Artists must adhere to in order to bulk up while still making their contracted limits. However, the same is true for the most part when it comes to undersized fighters rather than simply just the big [...]

J-Lau and White don?t shy away from saying Guillard looked past UFC 136

First, Melvin Guillard took it on the chin in the Octagon then came a few more shots during the UFC 136 postfight press conference.

Guillard was the victim of a major upset (closed as a minus-600 favorite at some off-shore sports books) against Joe Lauzon, then during the postfight, the victor and Dana White said they thought the former title contender was too cocky for his own good.

"He came dancing in there like he'd won, like he'd just won the fight ... instead of being serious," White said (0:45 mark). "It'd be one thing if it went to the ground and Lauzon submitted him, but he rocked him twice and then submitted him."

Guillard came out swinging for the fences from the get-go. He got crushed by a left hook and down he went. It was all over in 47 seconds for Guillard. This after he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune he was expecting to knockout Lauzon.

"I never predict the round, but I know I will get a knockout," Guillard said before the fight. "It's no pressure, but I want to outperform everyone on the card. I can't wait. And I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about what I'm going to do."

He also called Lauzon a featherweight.

Lauzon said he was irked to find out that Guillard had spent part of Saturday afternoon hanging around the UFC Fan Expo at the George R. Brown Convention Center. That's not unusual for Guillard though on fight days. He told us in the past that he doesn't like to sit in his hotel room on the Friday and Saturday of fight weekends. Getting out and talking to the fans actually relaxes his nerves.

Later during the postfight proceedings, White mentioned Guillard again. When referencing his own focus on the huge Fox televison debut on Nov. 12, White said he didn't want to pull "a Guillard" and lose track of his goal. That stings.

Guillard made it back from the brink of lot worse. Now the 28-year-old has to regroup and try to tear through the division again.
