McGee decisions Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25

McGee decisions Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25

"The Ultimate Fighter" winner Court McGee notched a win after a long layoff from the Octagon, taking a decision over Dongi Yang at Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans on Saturday. The judges gave McGee the win 30-27, 29-28, 30-28.

McGee wobbled Yang in the first round, getting the better of Yang in the stand-up battle in a very close round that featured Yang stalking, but McGee striking. The second round showed a tired Yang slowing down, but still throwing big shots. As the round wore on, McGee was able to land more kicks and punches. Yang didn't have enough energy to defend the strikes.

The fight exploded in the third round, as Yang knocked McGee down halfway through the round. He followed up with a flying knee, but took some damage of his own as both fighters emerged with bloody faces. McGee defended a toss attempt by Yang, and then took Yang down and went straight into full mount. Yang's conditioning -- or lack thereof -- played a part, as McGee finished the round with an easy takedown into half-guard. McGee followed up with elbows, then moved into a guillotine choke. The round ended before McGee could finish the submission.

McGee hadn't fought since October of 2010 due to a knee injury. His record moves to 14-1, while Yang falls to 10-2.

Anderson Silva Needs to Fight a UFC Champion?Just Not GSP

It seems the only ?super-fight? UFC President Dana White ever talks about is one pitting the middleweight master Anderson Silva against popular 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre. It?s an intriguing bout on paper given GSP?s wrestling and Silva?s stand-up, but perhaps not a particularly competitive one in the end given the size difference between the [...]

Rothwell gasses as Hunt pulls the upset at UFC 135

Rothwell gasses as Hunt pulls the upset at UFC 135

Heavyweights and the Mile High City don't mix. Ben Rothwell found that out the hard way in Denver.

The 263-pound Rothwell was nearly falling over from exhaustion by the middle of his fight against Mark Hunt. Hunt, a big boy himself, beat up the helpless Rothwell over the last two rounds to get a unanimous decision win, 29-28, 29-27 and 30-27 at UFC 135.

Rothwell (31-8, 1-2 UFC) was a heavy favorite at minus-350. The 37-year-old Hunt entered the fight at just 6-7 during mixed martial arts career.

He was given a few fights in the UFC because of old contractual obligations that carried over when Zuffa bought PRIDE. A top level kickboxer, Hunt was thrown to wolves by the Japanese promotion. The Japanese aren't always interesed in even match ups so Hunt lost to guys at the top of the MMA game like Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi and Hidehiko Yoshida.

He's seized the opportunity with the UFC. The biggest thing did was re-dedicate himself as far as conditioning. The 5-foot-11 fireplug fought around 290 pounds in Japan. Now he's a much trimmer 261 and he's added solid grappling to his game.

Hunt really stymied Rothwell's takedown attack in the first round, The Samoan fighting out of New Zealand thwarted 10-of-12 takedowns. His powerful striking sapped Rothwell. He landed 58-of-85 shots when he had top control with a 90-20 strikes landed edge.

Vitor Belfort wants to fight Chael Sonnen in December

Just because earlier this week former UFC champion Vitor Belfort had to withdraw from a bout in November due to injury doesn?t mean the heavy-handed Brazilian is content to simply sit on the sidelines and twiddle his thumbs. Rather, Belfort already has a potential opponent in mind for his return to the ring and isn?t [...]
