Facing a third straight loss, Fedor Emelianenko tried some new tricks before and during his fight against Dan Henderson. But his opponent was simply better and a little more resilient in the main event of Strikeforce's event at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Just seconds away from possibly losing the fight after a Fedor barrage, Henderson kept his wits, pulled off a nifty escape and landed an uppercut that changed the fight. That one punch plopped Fedor straight down on his face where Henderson landed three more shots and referee Herb Dean chose to save the fallen former champ at 4:12 of the first round.
From 2000-08, Emelianenko was considered one of the top three mixed martial arts fighters, if not the top fighter, in the world. He reeled off 31 wins without a legitimate loss (only loss due to fight stopped because of a cut) .
But it's been a rough run recently for the former PRIDE king. He lost via shocking submission to Fabricio Werdum, was dominated by a massive heavyweight in Antonio Silva and Saturday, he was stopped via strikes for the first time in his career by the Strikeforce light heavyweight champ, who came into the fight giving away 16 pounds.
Henderson (28-8) fought 18 times in PRIDE in Japan, so he's well aware of Fedor's place in the sport.
"I've been a huge fan of Fedor forever and I respect him so much as a fighter, and what he has done for the sport," Henderson told Showtime's Gus Johnson. "For me, [this win] is a huge accomplishment compared to a lot of the things I've done in this sport."
The finish was as shocking as it was exciting, simply because it happened so quickly.

Henderson, 40, got off to a quick start, but Emelianenko seemed to get back into the fight when he drilled his opponent with a nice combination that backed him up. Then Fedor landed a thudding left uppercut that dropped Henderson near the cage. Emelianenko went in for the kill without securing top control. He got off three shots that grazed Henderson, but the former Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler used his grappling to grab Fedor's right knee and pull him off. Henderson immediately jumped behind him and unleashed a vicious right uppercut under Fedor's right arm. The impact was delayed for a split second and then Fedor fell flat on his face. Henderson jumped on top, landed two more rights and a left. That's when the referee arrived to save Fedor. All that in roughly nine seconds.
Fedor (31-4, 1 NC) told Johnson, he thought the fight was stopped prematurely.
"I think it was early. I don't want to say anything bad about the referee, but it seemed to me like it was early," Emelianenko said through an interpreter. "I was clearly hit, but wasn't hit flush, directly. It seems like I could've continued."
It was hard to say either way. Fedor did appear stunned as he sat up after the finish, but far from rocked.
Fedor, 34, was non-committal about his future, saying it's God's will whether he fights again. Ultimately, it probably won't be Emelianenko's choice. Emelianenko was reportedly making $1.5 million for this fight. With three straight losses, it's hard to imagine Dana White and company retaining his services.
Henderson's future is also in doubt. This was the last fight on his contract and he'd be a natural to slide back over to the UFC where he was 5-2 during two stints with the bigger promotion. Henderson left the UFC back in 2009, signing a big deal with Strikeforce. He could easily move back into the UFC's 205 or 185 division and be an immediate title contender.

Keiko Fukuda is still vibrant and alert at 98 years old, but simply surviving this long isn't on the top of her list of achievements.
The Sensei is an accomplished martial artist. In fact, she's one of only 16 people to ever earn a 10th-degree black belt in the combat sport of Judo. Last week, she became the first woman to be promoted to Judo's highest ranking. Through hard work and persistence, she's overcome a sexist ranking system in the world of martial arts.
Fukuda first discovered Judo in 1935 and by 1951 she was a fifth-degree black belt. She stayed there until the early '70s.
"The Kodokan was old fashioned and sexist about belts and ranks," Fukuda said (0:50 mark). "They just decided women didn't need any ranks over fifth degree. I was fifth degree for 30 years. This was the Kodokan's sexism."
Fukuda still teaches Judo three days a week. She's devoted her life to the discipline.
"All I did was Judo...this was my marriage," Fukudo reflected tearfully. "This is when my life destiny was set. I just never imagined how long this road would be."
Believe it or not, Fukuda worked under Kano Figura, the founder of Judo. Figura, born in 1860, took Fukuda under his wing as the martial art introduced a women's division.
Judo is one of the many bases behind mixed martial arts. Some of the top judokas in MMA include Karo Parisyan (first-degree black belt), Yoshihiro Akiyama (third-degree black belt) and Dong Hyun Kim (fourth-degree black belt)

Good thing Randy Couture has thick skin. Otherwise he shouldn't be in the fight prediction game because inevitably there will be some fighters who get irked when he picks against them. Couture already got an example of that when Quinton "Rampage" Jackson lashed out calling the retired fighter "decrepit."
"I didn't even tune into all of that. I knew where it was coming from. Timing is everything," Couture told "The MMA Insiders" on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM (4:30 mark). "There were negotiations between the parent company for Affliction and Rampage for a new contract. [...] He wanted a reason to go with Elite and it coincided with me inadvertently giving a pick on the fight with Matt Hamill."
Couture does a series of picks on video with Affliction and its president Tom Atencio. Before UFC 130, Couture chose Hamill over Jackson. Jackson rolled to an easy three-round victory.
"I try to be as objective as I can. Rampage and I have been friends. for a long time. I was shocked that he was that upset about a stupid pick. I was the first one to say 'I got that one wrong,'" said Couture.
Couture sat down for 45 minutes with the ESPNRadio1100 crew. In this segment, he also spoke about Dan Henderson and his future. Couture gave the latest update on his movie career. You can listen to the entire Friday edition of "The MMA Insiders" here.

If fighters deliver on fight night for the UFC, the promotion has no problem throwing lots of cash their way. Bonuses for Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and Knockout of the Night have turned out to be brilliant moves and really motivate the fighters.
There was no submission victory at UFC 133 so UFC president Dana White used the extra cash to award a brand new bonus -- "the thanks for getting those horrifying shorts off TV as soon as possible" bonus.
Brian Ebersole's victory was impressive, but White was happier with the fact that he no longer had to watch Dennis Hallman (pictured) in the Octagon wearing tiny, tiny blue Speedos.
White argued that Hallman's fight gear wasn't even a Speedo.
"That wasn't a Speedo. I've seen Speedos before, that had to be custom made," White said with a tone somewhere between joking and still kind of irked. "[Ebersole] deserved every dime he got!"

The blue trunks may have distracted Ebersole. A good grappler, he was taken down in the opening 15 seconds of the fight and had to deal with a submission predicament. Hallman had his back and was trying to secure a choke.
"I was just worried about that cup, and his uniform malfunctioning to be quite honest," joked Ebersole. "I knew I was fine from there. I've been training with some very, very good black belts in Melbourne, Australia."
Aside from the money, Ebersole said the strange reason for the bonus will make for a great story down the road.
"It's obviously one of them stories that's going to stick out for a long time. The longer I fight, the less stories I'm probably going to remember. That'll be one I can tell the grandkids and have a laugh about," said Ebersole.
Ebersole's journey to fighting on a UFC pay-per-view is pretty amazing. He's a 30-year-old from Indiana, but had to fight abroad to finally get his chance. He moved to Australia in 2007 and logged a total of 61 professional fights before catching the attention of the UFC. Now he's 2-0 with the biggest promotion in the world.
"It's a bit surreal. I always knew I could compete with the best guys in the world because I trained [in the past] with the best guys in the world out in California. So to be able to get my chance and win my first two fights ... you know I got thrown at the wall and I stuck," Ebersole said. "You know they can't rid of me for a little while. I'm pretty happy that I've done what I set out to do."
