Munoz interview: This wrestler isn’t afraid to hit the mat with Maia

Mark Munoz and Chael Sonnen were high level wrestler on the collegiate scene. Munoz was a little more accomplished, but they've both used the same base to put together solid runs in the UFC. So when Munoz looks at how Sonnen did when he faced Demian Maia at UFC 95, it's almost hard to imagine the former Oklahoma State star would risk going to the ground with the jiu-jitsu ace. It took less than three and a half minutes for Maia to submit Sonnen. Munoz disagrees.

"I'm not afraid of the ground game," Munoz said (5:30 mark). "I'm confident when it goes to the mat. I'm definitely going to take the fight where I want and we're going to fight on my terms."

Maia's win over Sonnen was startling. Once he got a hold of Sonnen, he tossed him over his head and fell into the mount where he transition to a triangle. Munoz said there was more to the story. Sonnen explained that he had been hit just a few seconds before and was stunned, which allowed Maia to ragdoll him so easily.

Using advice Sonnen gave him, Munoz just wants to be careful in the clinch and especially if he has top control.

"You just gotta have to be able to posture and not keep your head down so low to be able to get hit," Munoz said. "For me, I drop bombs. That's what I do. Demian knows that."

Munoz (10-2, 7-2 UFC) has been drilling his jiu-jitsu for the last few years with a bevy of Brazilians at Blackhouse MMA in the Los Angeles area. For this camp, Junior dos Santos and the Nogueiras were down in Brazilian, so Munoz had to change things up.

At his own gym, Reign Training Center in Lake Forest, Ca., he worked with Jason "Mayhem" Miller. He also has a partnership with King's MMA in Huntington Beach, Ca., and got to work with Mauricio Rua, Wanderlei Silva, Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Fabricio Werdum.

Meanwhile, Maia worked with Blackhouse's new gym in San Diego. At times, that kind of crossover can irk fighters, but Munoz was far from insulted.

"It's a tangled web we weave, training with certain guys. If you're training with the right guys, you're going to end up fight people or people you know of or the friends of your training partners," Munoz said (8:04 mark). "At the same time, it's one thing to tell somebody that they have something, but it's a whole different thing to actually do it and execute it inside the Octagon."

Surprisingly, Munoz is a minus-130 favorite over Maia. The Filipino has won two straight and 5-of-6 while Maia (14-2, 8-2 UFC), has looked less than stellar recently as he's looked to showcase his striking more in decision wins over Kendall Grove and Mario Miranda.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum Predictions

Filed under:

After a far-too-lengthy delay, Strikeforce's heavyweight tournament is finally about to return, with the final two first-round fights taking place on Saturday in Dallas, as Alistair Overeem rematches Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett takes on Brett Rogers.

What: Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum

When: Saturday, the undercard begins on HDNet at 8 PM ET and the main card starts on Showtime at 10.

Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas

Predictions below.

Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum
This matches up the best striker in the heavyweight division in Overeem with the best grappler in the heavyweight division in Werdum. The first time these two fought, in Pride in 2006, Werdum's grappling got the better of Overeem, who tapped to a kimura in the second round.

But Overeem is a much, much better fighter now than he was then. For one thing, he's gone through an extraordinary physical transformation and is packing on about 30 pounds more muscle. For another, he has refined his kickboxing to the point where he won last year's K-1 World Grand Prix Final. Werdum isn't facing the same Overeem he was in Pride.

Werdum is also coming off the biggest win of his career, against Fedor Emelianenko a year ago, but I can't help but question whether the long layoff since the Fedor fight is going to be a problem for Werdum, who hasn't always stayed in top shape between fights. I like Overeem to smash Werdum and make a strong case that he's the most dangerous heavyweight in all of MMA.
Pick: Overeem

Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers
Barnett is a heavy favorite and has accomplished far more in his MMA career than Rogers, but I'm just not convinced that he still has it anymore: After getting busted for steroids before a planned fight with Fedor two years ago, Barnett has only fought twice, and although he won both, neither was against good opposition. I see the heavy-handed Rogers pulling off a surprise TKO win.
Pick: Rogers

K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal
Noons is fighting for the first time in 2011 after a very active 2010 saw him win three fights and then lose a hard-fought decision to Nick Diaz. Masvidal took it to Billy Evangelista in winning a one-sided unanimous decision in March, but I like Noons to stand and bang with Masvidal and win a decision.
Pick: Noons

Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson
One of the best prospects in the heavyweight division in all of MMA, Cormier is a great wrestler who should have no trouble taking Monson down and controlling. At his best, Monson is a good enough submission grappler to threaten anyone on the ground, but at age 40 Monson is no longer at his best.
Pick: Cormier

Valentijn Overeem vs. Chad Griggs
A year ago, Strikeforce signed Griggs as nothing more than a warm body to throw in the cage with Bobby Lashley. But Griggs surprised everyone with an upset of Lashley, then won another fight with Gian Villante in February. Now he gets Valentijn, Alistair's older and less talented brother, and I think he'll make it three in a row in Strikeforce.
Pick: Griggs

Guida’s mother wins loudest fan of the night

"The Ultimate Fighter" finale took place at the Pearl at the Palms, a small, intimate venue for fights. That intimacy also means that every yell from the fans can make it onto the broadcast. Chris Cope inspired an onslaught of "woooooos," but no fan had a more raucous cheering section than Clay Guida.

That was led by the matriarch, Debbie Guida, or as she's better known, Mama Guida. Her yells could be heard through the television screen as he won a decision over Anthony Pettis. Guida's wrestling left little doubt in who won the fight, while his family's cheering section left little doubt who was the most popular fighter at the Palms.
