Former NHL enforcer Brashear wins MMA debut; Cote wins on same card

It wasn't exactly MMA's finest moment, but Donald Brashear seemed to wow some in the crowd. The 18-year veteran of the NHL crushed Mathieu Bergeron in just 21 seconds in Quebec City on Saturday night.

Brashear, who has a three-fight deal with Ringside MMA , came to the arena with a Philadelphia Flyers bag.

A southpaw, the former Canuck, Flyer, Canadien, Thrasher and Capital, crushed Bergeron with a left and then pounded away on the ground as the last second fill-in turtled up.

Believe it not, the Brashear fight was actually the co-main event on the card. Former UFC middleweight title challenger Patrick Cote won via unanimous decision over Todd Brown in the co-feature. This was Cote's second straight win away from the UFC. He beat Kalib Starnes, another UFC alum, back in April. Cote (15-7) was cut by the promotion after a loss at UFC 121 to Tom Lawlor. A serious knee suffered against Anderson Silva at UFC 90 derailed Cote's career for nearly two years.

Credeur interview: TUF 7 vet returns from major brain scare with new perspective

You think you're having a bad day? Imagine Tim Credeur's position as he left a doctor's office in April of 2010 after being told he had an unknown mass in his brain that could be potentially fatal. Then Credeur called his wife and was greeted by the unbelievably great news that the couple was pregnant with their first child. That's a rough spot.

The 33-year-old's health and longevity were in question. It appeared certain that his fighting career was over as well, but he was supposed to snap right into celebratory mode.

"My brain scan came back and they didn't know if it was a brain tumor, if it was the beginning of an aneurysm and it was inoperable," Credeur told us in the RawVegas video. "My wife calls me to tell me she's pregnant with our first baby. That's a tough 10 minutes for anybody to go through. I kind of shelved my problems and I was excited for her, and I didn't tell her anything for a week."

Credeur eventually told his wife and went through nine months of consistent brain scans and check ups to find out that the anomaly in his brain was similar to a birthmark. He's at no risk and it's safe to continue fighting. After 21 months away from active fighting, he's thrilled to be back.

"Feeling like I'm not going to be able to participate in the sport I love and appreciate, and that it was going to get taken away from me for some weird medical scare was kind of tough to swallow," Credeur said. "So having the opportunity to come back and fight and do what I love to do is a huge opportunity."

Credeur's outlook on life, family and friends has changed.

"Having something like that happen to you, you know you re-evaluate a whole bunch of things in life. You realize that some of the most important things in your life are your relationships, who you are and how people view you. That's stuff important," Credeur said. "The integrity of a man defines who he really is. So I'm worried about that."

Credeur is part of "comeback night" in his fight against fellow veteran Ed Herman. Herman, one of the only fighters left in the UFC from Season 3 of TUF, deal with two knee surgeries during his 19 months away.

Pettis Brothers have a unique bond: MMA may have two future stars in the family

Anthony Pettis has risen to the top of MMA lightweight ranks. His mix of athleticism, stamina, creativity and well-rounded skill set is tough to beat. The sick part is that he's just 24 years old.

He's got the life experience of someone much older. That comes with training and staying dedicated for 14 professional fights.

It also happens when you have to survive the gruesome murder of your father at 15 years old. Pettis' father, Eugene was knifed down during a robbery gone bad. Anthony had to become a father figure for his then 8-year-old brother Sergio (pictured in the black shirt) along with staying on track to follow his fighting dream.

It's gone off with few hitches publicly and that includes the father figure part. His brother Sergio, now 17, is the spitting image of Anthony.

"I didn't even understand completely what happened," Sergio said referencing his father's death. "But as I grew older with all my friends at wrestling meets, their fathers were there and it was kind of depressing. But my brother Anthony was there, so it was alright."

Sergio's accompanied Anthony to Las Vegas to help him prepare for his lightweight showdown tomorrow night against Clay Guida in the main of the "Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale."

The younger Pettis is mature beyond his years, focused and incredibly poised for a teenager. He's even an amateur MMA fighter with plans set to turn pro when he turns 18. That's right Sergio is already in there fighting men while he's still a high school student.

Anthony raves about Sergio's potential.

"He was my main training partner for Guida," Pettis told "The MMA Insiders" show on ESPN1100 in Las Vegas. "He's already better than me in wrestling."

Anthony says the future is bright for his little bro.

"I guarantee my brother makes a big move in the sport," Pettis said. "Right now, it's my time but he's going to be 18 pretty soon and hopefully we will both be fighting on the same card sometime pretty soon."

Sergio just graduated high school, and shortly after his birthday in August, he'll make his pro debut in September.  The kid even speaks about his future career like he's a veteran.

"I've got a big name already with Pettis. That last name means I've got to live up to the hype he's had," Sergio said. "I've got high expectations, but I feel like I can reach them because of my training with him."

Let's allow Sergio to develop his career slowly, but Anthony doesn't have that luxury. All the pressure is on Pettis tomorrow night. He's a minus-170 favorite against a guy with 13 UFC and 39 overall fights under his belt. Guida feels disrespected a bit and wants to derail Pettis from getting his shot at the winner of Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard.

It?s that time once again, fans and friends. Another major MMA event has come and gone, and it?s time for my unofficial ?Best Performance of the Night? award. Ferguson wins “The Ultimate Fighter” with Nijem knockout

Tony Ferguson won the 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" with an impressive knockout of Ramsey Nijem in Las Vegas on Saturday night. In addition to winning a six-figure contract with the UFC, Ferguson also won the Knockout of the Night, earning a $40,000 bonus.

Nijem came out swinging in the first round, but Ferguson quickly answered with a takedown. After Ferguson wasn't able to do much with the ground position, Nijem rolled through to get back to his feet. The two traded punches until Ferguson caught Nijem with a right then a left hook. Nijem fell to the ground, and Ferguson finished him off with one more strike. The fight was stopped at 3:54.

Ferguson was surprised as he watched the replay of the round with UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

"I don't remember even throwing that," he said.

Ferguson played the role of the villain this season, drawing the ire of castmates on a drunken evening when he said several remarks that his teammates felt crossed the line.

"I learned about myself in there," Ferguson said about living in the house. "I brought a lot of demons in with me there, but from here on out I want to do the right thing."
